This is a map of H. P. Lovecraft's Arkham as invisioned by myself. I found a real map surveyed from 1886 of eastern Massachusetts and, through reading many of Lovecrafts stories over the past year, I decided on a location for the fictional city of Arkham. There is no river or major town in this location of Massachussets, so I had to change the terrain by hand to allow for the Miskatonic River Valley, as coined by Lovecraft. I used a scetch by the author as the reference for street positions and city size.

This is a part of the development of a larger project that I've been working on. Heres hoping it's the first of many updates.

Enjoy!

The use of the '98 topo base was a stroke of genius. I can't wair to see Innsmouth added to Great Neck. I am not sure that the Miskatonic River can be made to flow W-E from Dunwich - the topography just isn't there. I can't wait to see the next installment.

I can't wait either! I've done a little dabling with Innsmouth, but only just. And the river will flow from the West on the larger view of this image, suggesting it comes from somewhere over there, beyond the edge of the map...

The next update will be a change to the Welcome to Arkham sketch that I've been working on. After that, who knows?!

There's some makeup work happening to, though unrelated to Lovecraftia. You might get to see some of that soon.

Incredible! It's got an amazing vintage realism that really stands out. It has such a reality to it I'm really excited to see more.

I really dig this. Favorited!

Thank you, vonmeer! I would favorite it too... but its mine.

The realism is what I was hoping for, I deeply enjoy details and complexity, even though all those things take much more time to accomplish. It's worth it!

Wonderful work on that map; my only criticism is you need to add some more infrastructure (roads) north of the river, there must be a good reason to build four bridges across a river within a mile of each other. My thought is that Lovecraft must have only sketched the south half of Arkham.

I can hardly wait to see more of your project.

Hi, I tried posting a note on Propnomicon but I don't think it stuck. This is a great piece of work. To me it really gives Arkham a feeling of reality. I'm from Illinois and my knowledge of the geography of Massachusetts is limited so the first thing I did was find some maps to get a good point of reference. You've done an amazing job of fitting Arkham in perfectly.

I'm so glad to hear that. My hope was to help people get that real world feeling, help bring to life the early 1900's and Lovecrafts woelds.

I'm from Ohio originaly, and I've never been to Massachusetts either! The research that I've done has been fairly extensive, but I still feel like theres years worth of stuff to learn to do what I'm imagining.

Heres hoping it doesn't take years!!
